Snow Profiles

Snow profiles are observed at study plots, study slopes, fracture lines and targeted sites. This section outlines two types of snow profiles: full profiles and test profiles. A full profile is a complete record of snow- cover stratigraphy and characteristics of individual layers. A test profile is a record of selected observations.

Operational Meeting Forms

Utilized in the risk management process to communicate the evaluation of hazard and risk evaluations. The use of AM/ PM forms in avalanche operations allows for the standardized approach of communicating daily objectives, current hazards, mitigation plans and risk treatment strategies to achieve the organizational goals. AM/ PM briefings enable leaders to monitor and review the progress of daily operations.

Field Observations

Observations may serve as an interval measurement, accompany snow profiles, or are used to document current weather and snow conditions across the observed portion of an operational zone or area. Specifying the elevation and time range with details including location, aspect, sky cover, wind factors, temperature and precipitation type and rate acts as a structured approach to creating a subjective analysis of current field conditions.
